Why The Athos Diet Changes How We Think About Food
What Modern Medicine Can Learn from Orthodox Fasting
I would like to begin by thanking Dr. Michael Christian and John for inviting me onto The Orthodox Health Podcast and for hosting such a thoughtful and wide-ranging conversation about The Athos Diet. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to discuss not only the physical effects of Orthodox fasting, but also its spiritual purpose and what this ancient Christian practice may offer the modern world.
For more than a thousand years, Orthodox Christians—most notably the monks of Mount Athos—have followed a rhythm of fasting and feasting. This way of life developed long before anyone spoke about metabolic health, intermittent fasting, longevity, or nutritional optimization. Nevertheless, many of the practices preserved within the Orthodox tradition appear remarkably relevant to the health problems confronting society today.
The central question of our conversation was this: How do we ensure that we aim a tool to towards its greatest meaning.
