Orthodox Fasting: More Than the Foods We Give Up

Orthodox fasting is about far more than what we leave off our plates. I recently joined Luke Jansen for a thoughtful conversation about the ancient Christian practice of fasting, the Mediterranean way of eating associated with Mount Athos, and the connections between food, discipline, community, and the whole person. We explored intermittent fasting, protein, walking, longevity, and what modern science is beginning to investigate about practices Christians have lived for centuries. These are questions at the heart of my work in The Athos Diet and my forthcoming book, The Athos Protocol. For me, the opportunity is not to turn an ancient spiritual practice into another health trend, but to consider its physical dimensions without losing sight of its deeper spiritual purpose.

Thank you, Luke, for the thoughtful discussion and for helping make these ideas accessible to your community. . My hope is that this discussion encourages us to look beyond the question “What foods must I give up?” and ask, “How can this practice help shape the way I live?” This conversation is educational, not individualized medical advice; fasting should reflect your circumstances, with guidance from your priest and, where appropriate, your healthcare professional.
